Navarino Art

In choosing the 2014 venue for The Greek Conference, the organisers were impressed by Costa Navarino’s commitment to preserving Hellenic culture and ideals through its immense art collection documenting the Greek War of Independence. Original works of the 17th-19th centuries form an integral part of the interior of the hotels and restaurants. The collection comprises maps, oil paintings, watercolours, engravings, weapons from the Greek War of Independence and rare books.

Navarino Bay was the location of the historic naval Battle of Navarino in October 1827, in which the Ottoman armada was destroyed by an Allied force of British, French and Russian vessels. This marked a turning point in the war and helped secure Greek independence. It is considered by Greeks as important as the Battle of Trafalgar is to Britons.

Among the most valuable works in the collection are 24 paintings by Panagiotis Zografos, commissioned by General Makrygiannis in the 1830s. Visitors and Delegates can arrange a comprehensive presentation of the collection through a guided tour.

2013 also saw the opening of Biblioteca Gallery within the resort, a space for exhibiting the artwork of contemporary Greek artists.
